AMD releases FidelityFX Super Resolution, available in seven games today
AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR, was announced today. FSR, which was announced earlier this month, attempts to produce a high-resolution output picture from a low-resolution source, therefore improving performance without compromising image quality.
The functionality is now accessible in seven titles, including 22 Racing Series, Anno 1800, Evil Genius 2, Godfall, Kingshunt, Terminator: Resistance, and The Riftbreaker, as of today. The functionality will also be available in DOTA 2, Far Cry 6, and Resident Evil Village before the end of the year, according to AMD. According to the business, more than 40 game developers have committed their support for this functionality.
FSR is a spatial upscaling method that analyzes characteristics in the source picture and recreates them at a higher target resolution, followed by a sharpening step to improve quality by increasing texture details.
This method is used on top of the game’s existing anti-aliasing solution and is not intended to replace it. FSR also operates on a single frame at a time and does not use temporal information or motion vectors from prior frames.
This is where AMD FSR differs significantly from Nvidia’s DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling. To rebuild the final image, DLSS employs temporal data and motion vectors, as well as an AI. Nvidia does this as well, but on specialized tensor cores on the GPU, whereas AMD conducts all processing on its compute units.
In either instance, the objective is to rebuild a lower resolution input image into a higher resolution output image. As an example, suppose you’re playing a game on a 4K display with the output resolution set to 4K.
However, the game may internally render at 1080p and then produce a 4K image that looks similar to the output utilizing smart reconstruction technologies such as FSR or DLSS.
FSR, like DLSS, has four quality modes: Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, and Performance. The internal resolution is 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.7x, and 2.0x lower on each axis for each of these presets compared to the output resolution.
This implies that if your output resolution is 4K or 3840×2160, Ultra Quality will render at 2954×1662, Quality will render at 2560×1440, Balanced will render at 2259×1270, and Performance will render at 1920×1080. As the resolution of your output diminishes, so does the quality of your internal rendering. If your output resolution is 1920×1080, Performance mode will render as 960×540 internally.
Needless to say, as the resolution decreases, the image quality degrades since the reconstruction algorithm has less data to work with.
One significant advantage of FSR over DLSS is that it is an open source technique. This allows developers to freely incorporate it into their game or game engine. More significantly, the technology is compatible with nearly any hardware from any vendor, including Nvidia and Intel. This implies that FSR-enabled games will let you to enable the option on an Nvidia graphics card or even an Intel onboard processor.
akomakoo.com is the leading website for users to buy and sell laptops and computer accessories in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Launched in 2020, by Abdul Hamid Al Asfoor (Managing Director of Albayan Media Group), akomakoo.com has become the most exclusive and leading platform connecting buyers and sellers from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain and vice versa.
An exclusive and trusted community where underused goods are redistributed to fill a new need, and become wanted again, where non-product assets such as space, skills, and money are exchanged and traded in new ways that don’t always require centralized institutions or ‘middlemen’.
