Since the advent of the first motorcycles over a hundred years ago, the industry has continued to grow and innovate the technology behind steel horses. The motorcycles on the street today are some of the most powerful, cool-looking and best handling you’ll ever find. However, all the motorcycles for sale in Bahrain today, whether modern or vintage, fall into 7 basic categories and we’re here to give you the rundown of just what those categories are.

Standards

Standards represent a balanced style of build. They are able to offer a mix of traits found in other types of motorcycles but without focusing too much on any specific ones. Their stripped-down design has also earned them the name of naked bikes. Some of the traits of Standard motorcycles: –

  • Slightly forward-leaning rider position
  • Low or mid-length handlebars
  • Works well in commuting and long trips
  • Great motorcycle for beginners but also has options for veterans

Another feature of Standards is the lack of them as the motorcycles have only a minimum level of extras out of the box. Though in turn, they are also generally made to be fairly customizable, being able to include new seats, tank bags, luggage etc. Standards are generally considered to be the ideal motorcycle for first-timers. Examples of Standard motorcycles include Ducati Scrambler and Honda CB.

Cruisers

Cruisers are what come to mind when people hear the word ‘motorcycle, they represent that classic image, low-slung design with tall handlebars with a seat that just begs the rider to lean back into it. Cruisers are designed to be fun and comfortable and provide enjoyable weekend rides. Some of the traits of Cruiser motorcycles:-

  • Leaned-back riding position
  • Medium-height handlebars
  • Moderate to heavy weights
  • Popular for both commuting and long rides

Harley-Davidson is the biggest name when it comes to Cruisers as they have built their reputation on legendary Cruiser designs. Though others like Yamaha and Honda offer some great rides as well. Cruisers are also a decent starting choice for beginners due to their smooth handling and incredible stability.

Touring

These large and heavy motorcycles are designed for long rides with a rider-friendly ergonomic design. Touring cycles are often knowing as “baggers” due to the fact that they have built-in hard cases for carrying luggage. Some of the traits of Touring motorcycles:-

  • Neutral, upright riding position
  • Medium-length handlebars
  • Large fairing and windscreen
  • Large, heavy and stable

Touring bikes are also great if you’re planning to take someone along with you for the ride as the wide-spaced seat will easily provide a comfortable journey for both. These motorcycles contain some pretty beefy engines to handle the long-distance rides and adding in their large frames makes them quite an ordeal for beginners. These motorcycles also tend to be among the most expensive you can find.

Sport

If you’re feeling the need for speed then a Sports motorcycle is what you’ll need. They’re designed for precision handling and high speeds with aerodynamic performance in mind and they usually have a full fairing to reduce drag.  Some traits of Sports motorcycles are:-

  • Forward leaning riding position
  • High horsepower
  • High seat, low handlebars

The design for Sports motorcycles sacrifices comfort for performance so any longer journeys aren’t recommended. These motorcycles are best suited for track days and weekend riding. These motorcycles are most definitely not beginner friendly with their high horsepower, sensitive handling and lighting speeds.

Cafe Racer

These motorcycles call to the mind the bikes of the early 20th century with their classic styling. Though don’t think these motorcycles are stuck in the past as their top speeds and modern along with their classic stylings make them highly popular with today’s riders. Some of the traits of Cafe Racers are:-

  • Forward leaning riding position
  • Stripped-down design
  • Medium seat,  low handlebars

Cafe racers, like Sport bikes, are mostly built for aerodynamics over comfort. Owing to their compact size and nimble handling, cafe racers make great commuter bikes, but most are still quick enough to keep up on the highway for short trips at least. However, since these aren’t touring bikes, don’t expect them to be comfortable on long journeys.

Adventure/Dual-Sport

Dual-sport motorcycles combine the best of both worlds via merging a Dirt bike frame with Standard or Sport bike features. Though adventure bikes aren’t designed for the roughest conditions, they’re perfect for touring in remote areas where backroad capabilities are needed. Some of the traits of Adventure Motorcycles are:-

  • Medium-high suspension
  • Medium or taller seat hight
  • Great for touring, commuting or camping

Dual-sport motorcycles have become increasingly popular in the 21st century, with major manufacturers such as Ducati and Kawasaki now offering adventure models. These bikes are also great for beginners due to their relatively simple design.

Dirt

A dirt bike is radically different from most other bikes. They have knobby tires, high suspensions, and are designed to handle off-road conditions that most motorcycles can’t handle. They offer a great amount of speed and fun for outdoor and off-road enthusiasts. Some traits of Dirt motorcycles:-

  • Two-stroke or four-stroke engines
  • Upright, slightly forward-leaning riding position
  • High, springy suspension
  • Knobby tires

Riding a dirt bike requires different skills than riding a motorcycle, but it’s also a perfect way to improve upon balancing, clutching, and other essential skills for riding any motorcycle. Considering their specificity, Dirt bikes are very much not for beginners.
