In November, WhatsApp launched vanishing messages, which allow you to transmit texts, photos, and other material that would be automatically removed after 7 days. But what if that’s not enough time? View Once messages are a new feature being tested by the IM app.

They do what it says on the tin – the recipient can view the photo or video and it will disappear immediately after they close it. These kind of messages get no previews in the notification shade or on the lock screen, of course.

View Once messages can be sent in both individual and group chats. The feature is activated by tapping the circled 1 in the text box:

Surprisingly, this function works even if the recipient’s app does not yet support it — the message will be deleted after the first reading. This is useful because only the beta version of the Android app (2.21.14.3) presently enables sending such messages.

Remember that WhatsApp does not safeguard against screenshots or screen recording, which can be used to circumvent View Once messages. The software would not even notify you whether the message was recorded by the receiver.
